Will Rogers Elementary School District 11

Carrie Young, a teacher in Will Rogers Elementary School District 11, writes: I have a student in my third grade class who is one of two sons of a single mother. He was born in 1999 with a congenital birth anomaly resulting in no limbs. He has a partial foot on his left side with 3 toes. He is able to write in cursive, draw, and play video games with his toes. He is exceptionally smart and is involved in our gifted and talented program. He is above grade level in all academic areas. This school year he got on-line keyboard access and that has helped him complete work independently. He is able to use the mouse and scans and completes all his assignments. However, he is beginning to develop a curvature of his spine. It is currently at a 15% curvature. In order to utilize the mouse or a pencil with his foot he has to hold himself slightly tilted which is the cause of the spine deforming. If it gets worse he may have to have surgery and be less able to complete the tasks he can. Right now he is able to play on the playground and in gym by physically rolling around on the ground.

He works very hard to be as like everyone else as possible and has a phenomenal attitude. All daylong I hear him saying "I can do it! Let me do it!" I feel it is absolutely essential for this student to have access to a greater variety of assisted technology in order to prevent further spinal problems and to provide him with skills for his future. I am seeking the donation of a lap top computer with voice activation software. I believe it will improve his self esteem and allow him to complete his work at an independent level closer to that of his peers. Having access to this assisted technology could set him on the path to be a very successful, capable, young man and save him from becoming more physically disabled. It is essential that he get access to this technology. Please consider making a donation to our school or I would appreciate any information about organizations or individuals that may be able to help.

Westminster

Rocky Mountain Elementary - Westminster - (Seeking donations for a project at a sister school in Antiqua, Guatemala) - Kyle Hester writes: I teach art at a public school in Colorado. My school is very diverse. 30% of my students are English language learners (ELL) and half of that population speaks no English.

This year I have been granted a sabbatical to live in Guatemala in the spring semester to learn Spanish. One thing I would like to do while I'm there is to set up a sister school with an elementary in the town of Antigua where I'll be living. What I would like to do is to set up one laptop with a built in camera at a school in Guatemala and one in my classroom in Colorado so the students could share stories, art work, & experiences in real time.

Nov 7, 2007 update: Kyle writes: I am still here in Colorado on sabbatical taking classes in Spanish and science. I do not leave for Guatemala until February 1st. I will spend three months in Antigua, Guatemala studing Spanish, The Maya, and creating a sister school. My goal is to create a sister school in Antigua, Guatemala where my school and the sister school can communicate, share art work, stories, & experiences in real time.

I would like to have two laptops with a built-in web cam. I have seen models available at Circuit City & Radio Shack new for under $800. I would like to go with PC instead of Mac because I noticed the last time in Guatemala, the people using computers & the internet cafes were all PC. My school is compatible with both but the rumor is that we will be phasing out the Macs.
